Quisling: The Final Days · Norway (2024)
The war just ended. Norway is free. But one man still has to answer for everything he did to help the Nazis take over his own country.
Vidkun Quisling sits alone in a dark cell at Akershus Fortress, waiting for his trial. His name has already become an insult in half of Europe, a word for traitor. But behind bars, he agrees to talk with a priest, and slowly, something more unsettling than guilt or innocence starts to surface.
Does he actually feel any remorse? Or has he simply convinced himself, until the very end, that he was right all along?
Director Erik Poppe, known for tackling Norway’s hardest historical moments, turns this into a tense, claustrophobic two hander, less a courtroom drama and more a quiet standoff between two men and one very uncomfortable question: what does it take for someone to truly see what they’ve done.
It opened the Norwegian Film Festival in Haugesund in August 2024 and had its international premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. It is a story about a country’s darkest chapter that somehow still speaks to today.
