Most of us do not consciously choose where our technology and culture come from. We simply use what is there. What is promoted. What becomes the default.
Over time, that default has become overwhelmingly American in software and platforms, and Chinese in hardware. This is not a moral judgment. It is simply the landscape we live in.
What often goes unnoticed is that Europe has not stopped producing. In culture, it remains a global reference. In technology, design and independent software, it quietly creates tools that are reliable, well thought out and respectful of users.
Choosing Europe exists to make those things visible.
This is not a call to abandon what you already use. You do not need to cancel your accounts, change your phone or rethink your entire digital life. Radical turns rarely work.
That same principle explains why this newsletter is published on Substack. We use it consciously, knowing it is an American platform, because at the moment there is no European alternative that offers the same reach and reliability. Some initiatives exist at a national level, but there is still no strong European solution. This is not a contradiction: we only move away from what works when something better exists. When it does, switching will be easy.
But what if, once in a while, you discover
- a European app that does the job just as well,
- a film, book or podcast you would never see promoted by algorithms,
- a tool built by a small European team that values stability over hype?
If it works, you keep it.
If it doesn’t, you move on. Nothing lost.
