Book: Hey Hafni · Helle Helle 🇩🇰

The quiet complexity of a road trip through the Danish landscape.

Portrait of the Danish writer Helle Helle

Hey Hafni · Helle Helle · Denmark (2025)

Hafni, a 51-year-old woman, rents an apartment in Brighton for three months without quite knowing why, and hopes to feel something like herself again. It should be simple: quiet mornings, long walks. Naturally, her brother shows up and ruins the peace and quiet she was counting on.

Hafni keeps writing letters back home to an old friend, and slowly it becomes unclear whether she is the one telling this story or whether someone else has been writing it all along. Helle Helle is one of Denmark’s most original voices, and this novel belongs to the same loosely connected universe as her earlier books. Reviewers disagree about the tone: one Danish outlet calls it the darkest novel she has written, while two major newspapers stress its humour.
