Carta de Alforria · Plutónio · Portugal (2024)

Plutónio comes from the Cruz Vermelha neighbourhood, and by now he’s one of the biggest names in Portuguese rap, the kind who sells out arenas in minutes. Carta de Alforria, his fifth album, is the moment where all that experience turns into something bigger and looser than anything he’d tried before.

It’s a long record, and it takes its time getting somewhere. One track leans into moody trap, the next opens up into something closer to soul or Afrobeat, and somehow none of it feels like whiplash. Plutónio sounds completely at ease moving between worlds, like someone who’s stopped worrying about staying in one lane.

It clearly struck a nerve at home. Carta de Alforria became the most-streamed album by a Portuguese artist in a single day, and it’s part of why he’s now graduating from arenas to a full football stadium. All sung in Portuguese, but the sound itself needs no translation.
