Outdoor gear: Mammut 🇨🇭

Among the oldest technical mountain equipment companies still operating, founded in 1862.

Mammut · Switzerland

The name comes from a mammoth, an animal that vanished thousands of years ago, which fits a brand that has been quietly doing its thing since 1862. Mammut started out making rope for farmers in a small Swiss workshop in Aargau, long before anyone thought climbing mountains sounded fun, and slowly became one of the most trusted names in serious alpine gear.

Its flagship line, Eiger Extreme, is named after one of the most feared mountain faces in the Alps. The clothing and equipment are developed together with elite alpinists who actually climb that north face in the dead of winter, which is less a marketing story and more a real stress test where mistakes have real consequences.

Most of Mammut’s manufacturing happens outside Europe, yet Europe still brings in about two thirds of its revenue. The company has also been part of the Fair Wear Foundation, a group focused on fair labor conditions in the garment industry, since 2008, and it worked to remove PFAS, a group of long lasting chemicals commonly used to waterproof outdoor gear, from all its products by 2025. Not the flashiest brand in outdoor sports, but a fairly solid one, built the same way as their ropes, one careful step at a time.

Update, 15 October 2026. On 30 July 2026 Mammut announced that the Chinese investment firm CPE has agreed to buy the company from the investment firm Jacobs Capital. The agreement is subject to approval, and we have not found a report that the sale has closed. The headquarters is to stay in Seon, in the canton of Aargau, and the current CEO remains. We will update this post when the sale is completed.
