Back to school usually means new backpacks and fresh notebooks. This year in Spain, it also meant strikes.

The 2026-2027 school year began with a teachers’ strike in Catalonia on 8 September, and more action is called for the autumn, including an indefinite strike in Madrid from 14 October. The demands are lower class sizes, more staff and better pay. Timing made it sting even more: the new PISA report landed the same week, showing Spain’s results lower than in 2022 in maths and reading, and about the same in science.

It is the kind of story that sounds dry on paper but says a lot about a country trying to figure out what it owes its next generation, and about teachers who feel like nobody is really listening.

This episode of Rorshok Spain Update breaks it down in its usual style, quick, clear and packed into just a few minutes, perfect for catching up on Spanish news without wading through a pile of separate articles.
