Focal · France

Focal, based in Saint-Étienne, is one of the rare audio companies that designs and manufactures its own drivers as well as the finished headphones. Its high-end models, such as Utopia or Clear, are produced in France and aimed at the global audiophile market. It is not a product that everyone can afford.

Most headphone brands buy their sound from someone else. They pick a driver from a catalog, drop it into a nice enclosure and call it a day. Focal has never worked that way. Since 1979, when the engineer Jacques Mahul founded it in Paris, this company, now based in Saint-Étienne, has insisted on building the tiny speaker inside every headphone itself, the same way it builds the massive speakers that fill concert halls and living rooms, and that stubbornness has made it one of the most respected names in high fidelity.

Its flagship model, Utopia, uses a dome made of pure beryllium, a material so difficult and expensive to shape that almost nobody else bothers. The result is often described as one of the most transparent, true to life sounds you can get from a pair of headphones. Focal designs everything in France, and most of its production takes place in its own workshops in Saint-Étienne, which is rare in an industry that mostly outsources production to keep costs down.

None of this comes cheap, and Focal has never pretended otherwise. This is a brand built for people who care obsessively about how music actually sounds, not for everyone, and it seems entirely fine with that.
